Separation Techniques


In this module, students get introduced to the distinctive properties of mixtures and solutions. The module activities allow students to compare and contrast the physical characteristics of a few simple mixtures and solutions. They discuss the separation of mixtures and solutions back into their original components and different applications of mixtures and solutions. They use various techniques like magnetic separation, sieving, handpicking, filtration, chromatography to separate various types of mixtures. Examples include solid-solid mixture, solid-liquid mixture, liquid-liquid mixture. The concept of separation of mixtures is clearly outlined through an inquiry-based procedure.
