Fan Car

The module helps to re-discover the famous Newton’s laws of motion. Students first construct a car that will demonstrate Newton’s third law of motion. By active experimentation with the car as by the increasing weight of the car, students will deduce Newton’s second law of motion wherein they will see that acceleration of a body is inversely proportional to its mass. When a paper is stuck on the car in front of the propeller, it stops moving, which initially seems counter-intuitive. Analysis of the forces eventually leads to an understanding of Newton’s first law of motion.

Disciplinary Core Idea:
PS2: Motion and Stability: Forces and Interactions

Performance Expectation(s):
MS-PS2-1. Apply Newton’s Third Law to design a solution to a problem involving the motion of two colliding objects.
MS-PS2-2. Plan an investigation to provide evidence that the change in an object’s motion depends on the sum of the forces on the object and the mass of the object.
